Forest of Reading

This Reading Initiative is organized by the Ontario Library Association and run by teacher-librarians across the province. Students read recently published books by Canadian authors and then vote for their favourite book. This is the only book award chosen solely by students from across the province. Each year, the program begins in November and closes with a voting date in late April.

 

Blue Spruce Award - Aimed at Kindergarten to Grade 2 reader

10 picture books

 

Silver Birch Express Award - Aimed at the Grade 3 – 4 reader

combines fiction and non-fiction books

 

Silver Birch Award - Aimed at the Grade 5 – 6 reader

combines fiction and non-fiction books

 

Red Maple Award - Aimed at the Grade 7 – 8 reader

best fiction and every other year best fiction and best non-fiction

 

White Pine Award - Aimed at high school-aged teen reader

best young adult fiction

 

Le Prix Tamarack - Aimed at the Grade 3 – 6 French reader

combines fiction and non-fiction books

 By registering for the program on this OLA website,

  • you have access to the activities developed by the Provincial Steering committee
  • you have access to the listserv where librarians post their ideas/activities for all to use

  • it allows the student to vote for their favourite on the official voting platform

  • you can obtain tickets to the attend the official presentation of the awards in Toronto

 

 

GECDSB Forest of Reading Wiki

 

The Forest of Reading activities that are linked to the GECDSB Forest of Reading Wiki are created by GECDSB Teacher-Librarians. They include everything from introductory activities for the various forest programs, specifically designed activities for the books, culminating activities and a voting program for participants in the Blue Spruce Program.
